Artisan Spotlight: Anete Dinne of 80plus Coffee - Coffee & Wine: A Likely Comparison?

I adore coffee! Perhaps it’s in my roots - my mom grew up in the coffee estates in the region of India (Chikmagalur) with the first record of coffee back in the 1600’s. Whatever the reason, I’m a black coffee kinda gal (made the switch when I started caring about my health) and savor the taste when starting my day. Did you know that it is the world’s second largest traded commodity? The first is crude oil. As a consumer, things like knowing the story of a product and supporting the people that make good food possible, help to heighten my enjoyment of a product. This is what compelled me to invite Anete Dinne from 80plus, to share her coffee expertise!

Anete is Latvian, has lived in Italy for many years, and currently resides in the Catalonia region of Spain. She also studied at the University of Gastronomic Sciences, in the three year undergraduate program, and has her Q grader certificate, which makes her a bonafide expert in all things coffee. It doesn’t stop there as she also has certifications in tea and wine. Translation, she’s a beverage queen! Thanks to my blog, I have loved meeting and getting to know Anete. She has a shared passion and curiosity about gastronomy, travel, and nutrition so be sure to check out her blog to see her latest adventures.

80plus is a Barcelona based project from a third generation coffee roaster, Jordi Marcilla, which brings specialty coffee to the world. “80plus” refers to the minimum score requirement for a coffee to be deemed “specialty.” They are hyper focused on sourcing responsibly and investing in relationships with the coffee farmers. Great care is taken to experiment with roast profiles, which results in a highly curated range of offerings. It’s also important to them to engage with people, educate, and build a non-snobbish community around coffee. If you are able to order from them, it’s pretty much a guarantee for an elevated coffee experience! I have yet to try their coffee, however, I gifted it to one of my best friends and he was blown away. He equated it to opening a special bottle of wine and said the taste was remarkable, unlike anything he had ever tried before (he’s a fellow gastronome who loves coffee, so I trust his opinion.)

Speaking of wine, have you ever thought of it when drinking your cup of coffee? I hadn’t until I heard Anete’s lecture through our school and it was eye opening. Though it may seem like an unlikely comparison, Anete explains the parallels, the health benefits of coffee, practical tips on buying coffee and more. For a product that many consume daily, there are tremendous impacts to the farmers who cultivate the plants, the environment, and to yourself from a health point of view that are taken for granted.
